Early Orthodontic Treatment

Though an orthodontist can improve a smile at any age, there is an ideal time period to start orthodontic treatment. Beginning treatment at the most favorable time ensures the greatest result as well as the least amount of time and expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should take place at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, a comprehensive evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and a better opportunity for the most effective and efficient treatment.

By age 7, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in, giving our doctors an important view of how the teeth, jaws, and bite are developing. Some concerns may benefit from early treatment, while others are best monitored over time. Growth Guidance allows us to follow your child’s development closely and recommend care when the timing is most appropriate.

Benefits of Early Treatment

When early treatment is appropriate, it can help guide growth and create better conditions for the teeth, jaws, and bite to develop.

Phase One treatment, when needed, typically begins between ages 7 and 10 and lasts about 6 to 12 months. Its goal is to address significant developing problems before they become more severe and to support a child’s confidence along the way.

Depending on your child’s needs, early treatment may help:

  • Guide jaw growth to improve bite relationships and facial balance
  • Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches
  • Preserve space for unerupted permanent teeth
  • Create room for crowded teeth as they come in
  • Reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Address habits such as thumb sucking or abnormal swallowing patterns
  • Support more balanced function as your child grows

The goal is not to begin treatment as early as possible. It is to begin at the time when treatment can have the greatest benefit. If treatment is not yet needed, we can continue monitoring your child’s growth through Growth Guidance.

Dr. Resler was great to us and now Dr. Hamka is doing the same. Great bedside manner and my kiddo doesn't fear or get anxious to go to her appointments. Their staff is always so welcoming.

Both my daughters had their braces done at Resler in Caro. My oldest didn't have the new technology that younger one had. Both experiences were wonderful. The staff are amazing, kind and smiling. Thank you all for the care you gave our family.
